What is Slugging? Modern hack to make your skincare work harder overnight.

Do you spend way too much time on the internet? Same. If so, we’re pretty sure you’ve come across the Korean skincare trend called slugging. (and no need to fear, it actually does not involve snails.)

Okay. Then what exactly is slugging? It’s when you add an occlusive layer (most likely Vaseline) over top of your entire nighttime skincare routine to seal in all the moisture and hydration. As a result, you will wake up the next day with plump, hydrated skin because all of your skincare has had the ability to sink overnight with that occlusive layer sealing it in. Additionally, your skin has also had protective barrier over top of it overnight, so that helps to retain any existing drop moisture that you skin already had too. Wait, are you following?

What the HELL does “Occlusive Layer” mean?? Occlusives stop water and natural moisture evaporation from skin by creating a waterproof coating on it. You would recognize them as ingredients or products like Petrolatum (Vaseline, Aquaphor), Silicones, Beeswax, Carnauba Wax, and Squalene just to name a few. Is slugging safe for acne or oily skin? Well, that’s where things get tricky. Slugging probably sounds like a living nightmare for people with acne prone or oily skin, as you aren’t allowing your pores to breath. Don’t fret, oily friends. We’ve got you (comfortably) covered.

WLDKAT just created a product that will give you the beautiful, hydrated, glowing skin you wake up with after a night of slugging, but without any ingredients that will clog your pores. Please give a warm welcome to STARFLOWER + SNOW MUSHROOM ultra-hydrating sleep mask, and the world of *humectants*.

Humectants attract and transport water into skin. It’s extremely softening and moisturizing, without clogging your pores like an occlusive might. You would recognize humectants as ingredients like: Glycerin (our queen), Hexylene glycol, Aloe Vera Gel, or AHAs, just to name a few. (PS. WK sleep mask has multiple humectant ingredients in the formula!) Did we lose ya again?

What does a Humectant have to do with slugging? Well, we understand that everyone’s skin has different needs, and suggesting the “slugging” technique is not something that will work for everyone. Humectants give you all the benefits of slugging, without clogging your pores. Ultra-hydrating Sleep Mask has the ability to absorb excess oil, while still allowing the skin to breathe and feel refreshed. This mask is formulated for all skin types making it a better alternative than using Vaseline, especially for oily or acne prone skin. If you layer Sleep Mask on top of your PM skincare routine like you would for slugging, your skin will benefit from all those extremely hydrating and nourishing ingredients and be shocked at how plump and hydrated you skin looks when you wake up. Happy Glowing!
